GT-R just got $7,000 more expensive
October 14, 2008

The early bird gets the cheap GT-R. Or so it is for a while after Nissan, effective immediately, bumped the price of the 2009 Nissan GT-R to $76,840 for the GT-R and $79,090 for the GT-R Premium model. That’s a price hike of almost $7,000 from last year’s base MSRP of $68,850. The price hike comes because Nissan claims the price of raw materials has sky-rocketed.Luckily for some, the adjusted price does not affect orders placed before September 5th.
While I wonder why Nissan would give the GT-R an interim “price adjustment”, it is nothing compared to the dealers already selling GT-R’s for atleast $10,000 over Nissan’s original MSRP. The sad thing is dealer hikes and the latest price adjustment have pushed the once affordable GT-R into Porsche 911 territory.
Nissan 370Z upcomming
October 14, 2008

It’s been a while since we’ve heard or seen anything about Nissan’s upcoming 370Z, but lately there’s been a small outbreak of spy images and info about the new Z-car, giving us a more detailed glimpse at the latest car to wear the coveted Z badge.
Clear as day is the 240Z-esque rear quarter window treatment, fatter fenders and bulldog-like front bumper. The body itself also appears shorter, squatter and generally more solid than the 350Z, while the be-fanged front bumper also appears to have taken on an almost GT-R-like quality.
On the inside there’s more organic styling in the centre console and dashboard, a set of column-mounted paddle shifters for the seven-speed auto gearbox (no twin clutch cogswapper has been announced) and Nissan/Infiniti’s familiar sat-nav interface, which finally makes the move into the Z.
Aesthetically, the 370Z is beginning to look more and more like a proper sports car – and one that’s a good deal more upmarket than its predecessor, the Z33 350Z. It’s a promising sign for Nissan, as the Japanese automaker has previously hinted that the latest addition to the Z-car family will have Porsche’s Carrera squarely in its sights.
But despite its prestige aspirations, don’t fret too much if you don’t have the coin to buy one when it launches later this year. For the down-at-heel and thin-of-wallet, the 370Z will still be available in a far more affordable form in the latest game from EA’s Need For Speed franchise: Need For Speed Undercover. Say what you will about the game itself, but the Z’s looking hotter and hotter the more we see of it. Check out the screen grabs below for an extra peek at the 370Z final form.
WRX STI the Future Spec-C
October 14, 2008

Spotted at the Motorsports Japan 2008 event in Tokyo, Japan last weekend. Subaru (FHI)’s new “Takumi” concept features upgraded spring and shock absorbers, lightweight 12-spoke wheels, slightly reworked exterior and engine tweaks (could not confirm what these tweaks were unfortunately). Could this be a peak into the future Spec-C?

The world’s number one awesome automaker from the land of the rising sun has decided to use brawns over brains for its Toyota Genuine Motor Oil Media Launch. The new, relaunched oil, is touted to ease engine friction, lubricates engine internals, clean deposits, inhibits corrosion, improves sealing and cools the engine by carrying heat away from moving parts. Intermolesting! The oil is available in two flavors, petroleum-based and synthetic, each guaranteed to make your Toyota last longer than it’ll already last. If you’re a sucker for boobies, you’ll rush out and grab yourself a jug… maybe both. Maybe not
Mitsubishi L200 Raging Bull on sale in UK
October 11, 2008

As if Mitsubishi didnt have enough special editions in their line up, they’ve decided to announce a new, higher specification second generation L200 Raging Bull Edition. The car gets satelite navigation, cruise control, a 420-watt sound system and a chrome rear bar with integrated steps. The line, which has so far been offered only in Aztec Red, is now also available in Cosmos Black and Graphite Grey. The “special edition” is oddly cheaper than the regular model – Mitsubishi offers a £3,000 discount on the automatic derivative and £2,200 on the manual with prices set for both versions at £16,939.

Greddy file for bankruptcy, Chinese blamed
October 11, 2008
Trust Japan, or better known as Greddy in the United States, filed for bankruptcy today, according to Japan’s largest credit research company, Teikoku Databank. According to Eric Hsu of JDM Insider, “In February 2008, Trust reported declined annual sales of US$53M. Loan payments totallying US$43M became a burden and was forced to file bankruptcy to the Tokyo District Court.” Currently, Trust employs 190 people and has been in the aftermarket industry since 1976. The United States subsidiary, Greddy Performance Products, has been doing business since 1994 and played a huge role in jump-starting the import aftermarket industry outside of Japan.
I do firmly believe that this is a huge blow to the aftermarket industry as we see it today. I’ve written about the decline of the industry previously, citing various reasons, and I’m more than certain that at least one of the reasons I cited has to do with decline of Greddy’s sales. Surely, other companies will gladly pick up where Greddy left off, but that does leave us as consumers with less choices and less innovation as well. I’d hate to see this as the beginning of a trend, but for all we know, other prominent aftermarket companies from Japan could easily be next.
Honda City
October 11, 2008

A new series of Honda City photos have been released, but this time they feature a left-hand drive version set to unveil at the Istanbul Motor Show this October.
While it’s not perfectly clear if the Turkish auto show signals a Europe-wide premiere for the City, the mechanics are not new to Europe: this particular econo car will be fitted with a 100PS 1.4 liter i-VTEC engine hooked up to a 5-speed or 6-speed i-Speed transmission out of its European Jazz and Civic cousins. The interior shots show the car will also be equipped, if you are so inclined, with steering-mounted paddle shifts for everyday econo-racing. The inside also gets an upgraded dash system with integrated digital displays and automatic climate control – something that was missing in the button-and-knob Asian variety.
On the outside, the car is aesthetically different from the Asian City we have seen. The mud flaps and door strips give the car a refined look.
I think it might do Honda good if they brought the City to North America.

Nissan GT-R vs Porsche
October 8, 2008
Clearly, the Germans were not best pleased when Nissan turned up at the Nurburgring in a ![]()
It’s taken a while but recent grumblings from Porsche that the GT-R can’t have been standard, or at least didn’t have normal tyres, have provoked a strong fightback from Nissan which has insisted that a) yes, the car definitely was Japanese market standard, b) ran on spec Dunlop SP Sport 600 DSST CTT tyres, c) was timed around the Ring using the exact same methodology as Germany’s Sport Auto Magazine and d) was actually carrying 50kgs extra weight for video and data recording…
Mein Gott. The fact that Porsche then claimed to have timed the GT-R itself against the GT2 and 911 Turbo around the Green Hell, and found the 7.29 wonder car to be 25 seconds slower produced waves of astonishment, even ridicule.
Maybe it all goes back to 1995 when Nissan claimed to have cracked the 8 mins ‘Ring record with an R33 Skyline GT-R. To this day, there are rumours as to how “standard” it really was, which is perhaps why Nissan has bent over backwards this time to refute the cheating claims. ![]()
But anyway, apart from tweaking Porsche’s nose, what’s the big deal for Nissan labouring to make the GT-R so fast around the Ring?
“Circuits like the Nurburgring and Sendai in Japan have been used extensively for the testing of GT-R not for the sake of setting records, but as the most challenging courses in the world recognized by consumers and manufacturers as the acid-test of a true supercar,” comments Nissan spokesperson, Simon Sproule.
Privately, though, company insiders are both bemused and flattered that Nissan’s caused such a shock wave in the supercar performance world with the new Godzilla.
Just wait until the lighter, powered-up GT-R Spec V comes out…..
